Frequently Asked Questions

What flooring services do you offer?

Installation, refinishing, and repair of finished flooring — hardwood, engineered wood, luxury vinyl plank, laminate, tile, natural stone, and carpet, plus stairs and custom detail work. We are a licensed CSLB C-15 Flooring and Floor Covering contractor, which is the classification that covers this work in California. We are not a flooring retailer and not a showroom: the shop address is a working space, visited by appointment.

What is the difference between refinishing, recoating, and replacing?

They are three different depths of intervention. Recoating abrades the existing finish and adds a fresh coat without touching the wood — the cheapest option, and only available while the finish is worn but not worn through. Refinishing sands back to bare wood and rebuilds the finish, which resets the floor but consumes some of its thickness and can only be done a limited number of times. Replacement is what is left when the wear layer is gone, the material has failed, or the substrate has to be addressed. Which one applies is a condition assessment, not a preference.

Do you handle subfloor preparation and moisture testing?

Yes, and we treat it as part of the job rather than an add-on discovered later. That includes flatness measurement against the tolerance for the specified attachment method, moisture testing of the subfloor or slab with the appropriate method, and identifying what preparation the substrate needs before any material is ordered. Where the substrate needs work beyond flooring scope — structural repair, drainage, a plumbing source — we say so rather than installing over it.

Do you do repairs, or only whole-floor work?

Both, with one caveat worth stating up front: a repair only lasts if the cause is understood. Localized damage from a discrete event usually repairs well and invisibly enough. Damage from an ongoing condition — slab moisture, a floor pinned so it cannot expand, a wrong adhesive — will recur after any repair until the condition itself is corrected, so we diagnose before quoting rather than after.
