Flooring Comparisons

Every flooring decision comes down to a handful of properties that genuinely differ. These pages lay them side by side, say plainly which option wins under which conditions, and name the variables that actually settle it.

These comparisons argue one pair at a time. For the order the decisions come in, start with How to Choose a Floor.

Which One Is Right for Your House?

These are educational comparisons, not sales pages. Where a figure is set by a specific product's instructions rather than by a property of the material, we describe the relationship instead of inventing a number — and no prices appear here, because the cost calculator holds the only real ranges on this site.

Still Deciding?

The flooring glossary defines the vocabulary these comparisons use, the wood species pages go deeper on individual materials, and the cost calculator carries the real installed ranges for Northern California.

Frequently Asked Questions

How should I use these comparisons?

Each one answers a single either/or that people genuinely get stuck on, and each is written to reach a recommendation rather than to list attributes and leave you to decide. They are most useful once you have narrowed to two candidates — if you are still choosing between categories, the guides under /guides/choosing cover that decision first, and coming here too early tends to produce a confident answer to the wrong question.

Do you recommend one option in every comparison?

We give a recommendation and state the conditions it depends on, which is different from declaring a winner. Almost every one of these pairings has a real answer that flips depending on the substrate, the grade level, the household, and how the house is conditioned. A comparison that names a universal winner is usually hiding the conditions rather than resolving them.

Why isn't every possible pairing here?

Because a comparison is only worth publishing where the decision is genuinely live and the answer is not obvious. Pairings that nobody actually weighs against each other, or where one option is simply unsuitable for the application, produce pages that exist for search rather than for readers. We would rather carry fewer comparisons that resolve something.
