Find Your Floor's Symptom
Cupping
A concave profile across the width of each board — both long edges sit proud of the center, so the floor reads like a subtle washboard and you can feel ridges at the seams, especially when light rakes across it.

Boards lifting, tenting, or peaking away from the subfloor, often localized around a leak or flood but sometimes widespread. The floor is no longer attached and may feel loose or spongy where it has released.

Visible spaces between board edges, typically widest in the dry winter months. Seasonal gaps are thin and consistent across the floor; abnormal gaps are larger, uneven, or persistent through humid months.

Cupped or buckled boards, white blush or gray/black staining in the finish, a musty odor, and soft or spongy areas underfoot that signal the subfloor is saturated. Damage may be localized to the leak or spread across a flooded area.

A convex profile across each board — the center is high and the long edges dip away, the mirror image of cupping. It often appears months after a floor that had cupped was refinished.

Noise underfoot, usually localized to specific boards or areas and often worse in the dry season. A squeak that comes back every winter and fades every summer is behaving seasonally.

Fine white or gray lines that catch the light in traffic paths, or a shallow depression by a table leg or dropped pan that you can feel with a fingernail.

Dull, grayish traffic lanes down hallways and in front of the sink while the room's edges and areas under furniture still look glossy.

Dark brown-to-black blotches or halos near a pet's favorite corner, sometimes cupped or rough to the touch, with an ammonia smell that gets stronger in humid weather.

A crisp lighter-or-darker rectangle where an area rug or sofa used to sit, or a whole sun-drenched room that has drifted a different shade than the shaded rooms.

A drummy, hollow knock underfoot or when tapped, sometimes with a slight give or a click, in isolated spots or lanes while the rest of the floor feels solid.

Hairline-to-finger-width gaps opening between planks, often mid-floor or along a sunny wall, sometimes with an edge that has popped up slightly or a plank that shifts underfoot.

A raised ridge or tent along a seam that you can feel underfoot or see as a line of lifted planks where two rows meet, sometimes with the click-joint slightly separated at the top.

A crack running in a straight line across several tiles and their grout, grout crumbling out along walls or where the floor meets a cabinet, or a tile that sounds hollow and rocks slightly when tapped.

You feel the floor give or hear a squeak or pop underfoot in the same spots every time you cross the room, and on a tile floor you may see hairline cracks tracking along the grout lines.

Boards cup or their edges lift and gap, a glue-down floor feels loose or sounds hollow, or you catch a musty smell — often worst near an exterior wall, a bathroom, or the crawlspace access.

How do I identify what's wrong with my floor?
Start with the shape of the symptom, because it separates the two categories that matter. If the surface changed — scratches, dulling, colour shift — the material underneath is intact and the problem is usually cosmetic. If the material changed shape — cupping, crowning, peaking, gapping, hollow spots — the boards have moved or lost contact with the substrate, which points at moisture, an expansion problem, or a substrate condition. The pages here are organised by symptom for that reason: what you can see is what you can search.
Should I fix it myself or call someone?
The safe dividing line is whether the cause is known. Surface-level maintenance and small cosmetic touch-ups are reasonable to handle yourself. Anything where the boards have deformed is a diagnosis before it is a repair, and repairs made over an active moisture source fail — which means paying twice. If you cannot name the cause, that is the signal to have it looked at rather than to start work.
Will a problem get worse if I wait?
It depends on whether the cause is still active, which is the same question as everything else on these pages. A one-off event that has been resolved leaves damage that is stable and can be scheduled at your convenience. An ongoing condition — a slab wicking moisture, a floor pinned by trim so it cannot expand, a slow leak — progresses, and the affected area grows. Documenting the extent with a photograph now gives you a way to tell which one you have a month from now.
