Radiant-Compatible Installation
Hardwood Flooring Over Radiant Heat
Wood and radiant heat work together beautifully — when the product, moisture management, and warm-up are done right.
The Short Version
Yes — With the Right Wood and the Right Prep
Radiant floor heating is one of the most comfortable ways to warm a mountain home, and wood floors can live happily over it. The catch is that a heated floor makes wood expand and contract more, so product selection, moisture testing, acclimation, and a controlled warm-up all matter more than in a standard install. Renaissance Floors installs radiant-compatible wood flooring across the California Tahoe/Truckee region and the Sierra foothills — we're a licensed CSLB #1060673 contractor, and we sweat the details that keep a radiant floor flat and quiet for the long run.
How We Do It
Our Radiant-Floor Process
Right Product for Radiant
Not every floor belongs over radiant heat. We specify engineered wood built for the thermal cycling of a heated slab or subfloor — quarter-sawn and engineered oak are strong candidates because they move less across their width.
Moisture & Slab Testing
Radiant systems dry a slab differently than you'd expect. We test moisture in the slab and the wood, and we don't lay a board until both are in range — this is the step that prevents gaps and cupping later.
Acclimation With the Heat On
Wood needs to meet the conditions it will actually live in. We acclimate the flooring to the home with the radiant system operating at a normal setpoint, not to an empty, cold house.
Controlled Warm-Up & Cool-Down
After install, the system should come up to temperature gradually. We give you a clear, written ramp-up schedule so the floor and the heat settle in together.
Surface-Temperature Limits
Wood floors over radiant have a maximum recommended surface temperature (commonly around 80°F / 27°C per industry guidance). We size expectations and finishes around that so the wood stays stable.
Glue-Down or Floating, Chosen on Purpose
Over radiant we typically glue-down or float engineered flooring rather than nail into a heated assembly. We choose the method for your specific subfloor and system and explain why.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can you install hardwood over radiant heat?
Yes. We install wood flooring rated for radiant systems — almost always engineered construction — over properly prepared, moisture-tested radiant assemblies, with a controlled warm-up schedule. Done right, wood and radiant heat work beautifully together.
What's the best wood floor for radiant heat?
Engineered wood is the standard choice because its layered core resists the movement that solid wood shows with temperature and humidity swings. Rift and quarter-sawn oak add even more dimensional stability. We'll spec the right build for your system.
Can I use solid hardwood over radiant heat?
Solid wood is riskier over radiant because it moves more with the heat cycling and can gap or cup. In most cases we recommend engineered flooring for radiant installs; if you have your heart set on solid, we'll give you an honest assessment for your specific situation.
What temperature should a radiant wood floor run at?
Industry guidance generally caps the wood's surface temperature around 80°F (27°C). Staying at or below that, with a gradual warm-up, keeps the wood stable. We build your expectations and the system's ramp-up around that limit.
Why does radiant heat require extra prep?
A heated slab or subfloor changes how moisture behaves and makes the wood expand and contract more, so slab/wood moisture testing, correct product selection, proper acclimation, and a controlled warm-up all matter more than in a standard install. That prep is exactly what protects the floor.
Do many Tahoe and mountain homes have radiant heat?
Yes — radiant floor heating is common in mountain and luxury homes across the Tahoe/Truckee region and the foothills. We install radiant-compatible wood flooring throughout our California service area. Call (916) 749-0272 for a free estimate.
