Can American white oak be refinished?
Yes — solid and thicker engineered white oak can be sanded and refinished multiple times over its life, which is a big part of its long-term value. Ask us during your estimate.
How stable is white oak flooring?
Moderately stable, and the cut matters more than the species does. The USDA Forest Products Laboratory gives American white oak a tangential coefficient of 0.00376 and a radial coefficient of 0.00194, which means a 5-inch plainsawn board narrows about 0.038 inch across a two-point drop in moisture content while the same board rift or quartersawn moves about half that. In a house that swings from a heated, dry winter to a humid summer, that difference is what shows up as gaps by the end of the season.
Is white oak harder than red oak?
Slightly, and hardness is not really why people choose it. White oak measures 1,360 lbf on the Janka scale against northern red oak's 1,290 - close enough that neither will outlast the other in a normal house. The real differences are that white oak's tighter, closed grain takes a smoother and more even finish, and it accepts the pale and smoked tones current interiors are built around, where red oak's pink undertone fights them. Red oak is actually the more stable of the two across the grain.
What plank width should I choose in white oak?
Width is a cost paid in seasonal movement, and it scales in a straight line. Using FPL's tangential coefficient, a two-point moisture drop narrows a plainsawn white oak board about 0.017 inch at 2 1/4 inches wide, 0.038 inch at 5 inches, and 0.056 inch at 7 1/2 inches. Wide plank is the look most of our clients want and it is entirely achievable - the way to buy it safely is engineered construction and a rift or quartersawn face, not a narrower board.
