Wide-Plank Flooring Installation

The open, custom look of 7"–10"+ white oak — installed with the flatness, moisture control, and method that keep wide boards flat and quiet.

Why Installation Matters

Wide Planks Reward Careful Work

Wide-plank white oak is the defining floor of modern mountain and luxury homes — but wide boards are less forgiving than narrow strips. They telegraph an uneven subfloor, they move more with humidity, and they need the right fastening to stay flat over long runs. Renaissance Floors specializes in wide-plank installation done properly: dead-flat prep, real moisture testing and acclimation, engineered construction where it makes sense, and layout that makes long runs look intentional. We're a licensed CSLB #1060673 contractor serving the California Tahoe/Truckee region and the foothills.

Our Process

How We Install Wide-Plank

Dead-Flat Subfloor

Wide boards telegraph every dip and hump. We flatten the subfloor to tight tolerances before install — the wider the plank, the flatter it has to be. This is where a good wide-plank floor is won or lost.

Moisture Testing, Every Time

Wide planks move more across their width, so a small moisture mismatch shows up as a big gap. We test the subfloor and the wood and only proceed when both are in range.

Real Acclimation

We let the flooring acclimate to the home's actual living conditions — not a job-site guess — so the boards reach equilibrium before they're fastened down.

Engineered Construction for Stability

At altitude and over slabs or radiant, quality engineered wide-plank is usually the smarter pick — its layered core resists the seasonal movement that challenges wide solid boards.

Glue-Assist & the Right Fastening

Wide planks often call for a glue-assist or full glue-down (sometimes combined with fasteners) to keep long, wide boards flat and quiet. We choose the method for your subfloor and product.

Layout & Board Selection

We plan plank direction, stagger, and sequencing, and we cull and blend boards for grain and color so long runs read intentional — not random.

Frequently Asked Questions

What counts as wide-plank flooring?

There's no single legal definition, but in the luxury market wide-plank generally means boards 7 inches wide and up, often in long lengths — a big step beyond standard 2¼"–5" strips. The wider and longer the board, the more custom and open the room feels.

Is wide-plank flooring harder to install?

It's less forgiving. Wide boards show subfloor imperfections and move more with humidity, so flatness, moisture testing, acclimation, and the right fastening method all matter more. That extra care is exactly what we build into a wide-plank install.

Should wide-plank flooring be engineered or solid?

For most of our climate — altitude, radiant heat, slabs — quality engineered wide-plank is the more stable choice because its core resists seasonal movement. Solid wide-plank is beautiful in the right setting; we'll give you an honest recommendation for your home.

Will wide planks gap or cup over time?

Any wood floor moves with the seasons, and wider boards move more — but proper subfloor flatness, moisture testing, acclimation, engineered construction, and correct fastening keep that movement small and even. Skipping those steps is what causes the gaps and cupping people worry about.

Do wide planks make a room look bigger?

Generally yes — fewer seams and long, uninterrupted runs make a space feel larger, calmer, and more custom, which is a big part of why wide-plank white oak defines the modern mountain-home look.
