That wide daily humidity swing is what a wood floor has to absorb here.

Winters are mild and wet rather than snowy, the foothill-edge position bringing marginally more rain than the valley's 19.87-inch annual normal. Freezes are light and brief, and NWS Sacramento reports snow so rare that its occurrence 'may be disregarded as a climatic feature.' Through winter the same stability works in reverse: the core resists the swelling that a solid floor would show as the house takes on moisture. Stable is not inert, though — the expansion gap at the perimeter still gets set properly.

Subfloor and Foundation Work

Rocklin's 1990s-and-newer subdivisions are predominantly slab-on-grade; NAHB's tabulation of the Census Survey of Construction found 89.9% of new single-family homes in the Pacific division were built on slab in 2024. The distinctive local fact is underfoot and literal: Rocklin is the town built on rock — 62 granite quarries operated here over the city's history, and the lighter granite in the California State Capitol came from Rocklin's quarries (the darker stone came from Folsom, per the State Capitol Museum). USDA soil mapping shows the modern consequence is shallow soil over hard rock: the western and central master-planned areas sit on Exchequer and Inks soils with bedrock at 11 to 13 inches and mapped cut-and-fill pads, while decomposed-granite Andregg ground lies to the east — all of it low in expansion potential, so seasonal clay heave is minimal compared with the valley basins, with one mapped exception: a Cometa claypan subsoil under the older downtown core. Slab flatness and an in-situ concrete RH test (ASTM F2170) still precede a rigid floor. The older downtown/quarry core is the most likely place to find raised foundations. Foundation type is confirmed on site.

A slab is the single biggest reason engineered hardwood gets specified at all. A dimensionally stable core can go over concrete where solid wood cannot — floated, or glued down with a moisture-control membrane. That is not a free pass: we still test the slab per ASTM F2170, still grind or fill it flat to the manufacturer's tolerance, and still match the adhesive system to the reading we get. Skipping the test is how a glue-down floor comes loose.

Over a crawlspace, engineered goes down by nail, staple, glue, or float, so the method follows the subfloor rather than the other way round. We flatten the subfloor first — engineered plank is stiff, and it bridges dips instead of following them, which is what produces hollow spots underfoot.
