Esparto sits at about 190 feet in Yolo County. The regional Sacramento Valley record shows summer air cycling widely within each day rather than staying uniformly dry. USDA-NRCS SSURGO maps eighteen soil units inside the CDP boundary — more distinct units than Dixon and El Macero carry between them, in a community a fraction of their size. They run the full range. At one end 5.0% of the area is Riverwash, bare recently stream-deposited material with a linear extensibility of 1.5%, and a further 3.1% is Loamy alluvial land at 1.0%. At the other, Myers clay reaches 12.0% linear extensibility, the highest single value measured anywhere in this service area, and Capy silty clay and Marvin silty clay loam sit at 8.7% and 8.2%. In total 32.4% of Esparto is mapped high or very high for shrink-swell while 9.5% rates low. The largest single unit, Tehama loam, covers only 23.7%. The practical consequence is that a soil reading taken on one Esparto lot carries little information about the next one, so subfloor and flatness expectations here should be set on the property rather than on the town.
