Grass Valley sits at about 2,411 feet in Nevada County. Wood floors here still move with a wide seasonal moisture swing between those dry summers and a very wet winter, so on-site acclimation to the conditioned interior is important. Expansion space at every wall, every cabinet toe-kick, and every door jamb — and no fastening the floor through to the subfloor at any point — is what prevents the peaking that shows up when a tight floor grows into itself.

Subfloor Prep

Grass Valley's older and hillside homes — 14.1% of the stock predates 1940 and 36.8% predates 1970 — lean toward raised perimeter/crawlspace foundations, with slab-on-grade in newer construction (NAHB's Census Survey of Construction puts new Pacific-division homes at 89.9% slab). The terrain is rocky metamorphic and ultramafic (serpentine) Sierra bedrock on steep lots; the documented regional series, Dubakella, is a reddish stony loam formed on serpentine — shallow, rocky, and well drained. The standout factor, though, is water: with roughly three times the valley's rainfall and real snow, crawlspaces under the historic homes trap wet-season humidity and steep, rocky lots push drainage toward foundations. So moisture management — crawlspace ventilation or encapsulation, vapor barriers, slab RH testing (ASTM F2170), and careful acclimation — matters more here than in any valley town. Laminate over concrete lives or dies on the underlayment. The core of a laminate plank is fiberboard: the wear layer sheds spills, but the core swells irreversibly if it takes on moisture from below. Over slab that means a vapor retarder is not optional, and it means testing the concrete rather than assuming a newer slab is dry. Flatness matters as much as it does for vinyl — laminate's click joints fail the same way over a dip.

Over a crawlspace, laminate needs the same two things: a flat, sound subfloor and a moisture path that has been dealt with underneath rather than covered over. A damp crawlspace under a fiberboard-core floor is a slow failure, and it shows up first as swollen, peaked joints.
