Galt Conditions That Affect Luxury Vinyl Plank

Galt sits at about 52 feet in Sacramento County. Summer afternoons in the Sacramento Valley are very dry. In the NWS Sacramento climate record for Sacramento, average relative humidity at 4 PM is 31% in June and 30% in July and August, while average humidity at 4 AM in the same months is 78–79%. Wood flooring responds to that daily swing rather than to the afternoon reading alone.

Winters are wet and mild rather than freezing. January normals at the nearby Lodi station are a 57°F high and a 40°F low, with 3.51 inches of rain; annual precipitation is about 18 inches, concentrated November through March. NWS Sacramento reports that dense fog occurs mostly in midwinter and can persist for several days under stagnant conditions. Cold does the opposite — a floor that was installed tight in summer heat can pull apart at the seams once the house cools. Correct gapping at the perimeter is what makes that a non-event.

Galt sits at the southern end of Sacramento County, nearer the Delta than the rest of the metro. NWS Sacramento reports that marine air enters the valley through the Carquinez Strait near the Delta, producing the prevailing southerly 'delta breeze' that cools summer nights, and that summer nights in the southern Sacramento Valley are usually pleasant as a result. Galt's marine influence is a non-issue for the plank's stability; it's the subfloor underneath that we still check.

Subfloor Prep

Galt splits between a small pre-war core and a large modern build-out: ACS 2020–2024 5-year estimates put 61.2% of housing units in construction years 1990–2009 against 9.1% predating 1960, with a median year built of 1994. NAHB's analysis of the Census Bureau's Survey of Construction found 89.9% of new single-family homes in the Pacific division were built on slab in 2024, against 73% nationally. That is a regional figure for recent new construction, not a measurement of Galt's existing stock. The era inference points to slab for the 1990s and 2000s subdivisions but says nothing useful about the older downtown core, where foundation type genuinely varies and site confirmation matters most.

LVP is the most slab-tolerant floor we install — the plank itself is waterproof and does not care about vapor the way wood does. What it does care about, completely, is flatness. A rigid-core plank telegraphs every high spot and bridges every low one, and the click joints along a bridged dip are where separation starts. On slab that means grinding down ridges and filling with a cementitious patch until the floor meets the manufacturer's tolerance, not until it looks acceptable.

Over a crawlspace the plank is still waterproof, but "waterproof floor" is not "waterproof house" — moisture coming up through an open crawlspace ends up in the subfloor and the framing regardless of what's on top. We look underneath first. Where the subfloor has soft spots or movement, it gets fixed before anything floats over it.

Galt Homes We Work In

Largely built during and after the 1990s growth period, over an older small-town core. ACS 2020–2024 5-year estimates put the median year built at 1994, with 41.3% of housing units built 1990–1999 and 19.9% built 2000–2009; 9.1% of units predate 1960. The 2020 Census counted 8,304 housing units, 74.3% owner-occupied. Galt's 1990s and 2000s homes are where LVP most often replaces carpet or sheet vinyl, and the subfloor under both is frequently uneven in ways nobody has seen for decades. The prep — not the plank — is the majority of the work in those houses, and it is the part that gets skipped by whoever installed the floor you're now replacing.
