South Lake Tahoe sits at about 6,237 feet in El Dorado County. Summer is the dry season here. Hourly outdoor readings at South Lake Tahoe Airport averaged 45.5% relative humidity in July across 2022-2024 — the lowest monthly figure of any market on this site — against 82.1% in December. NOAA 1991-2020 normals for the same airport also record a July average high of 80.4°F against a July average low of 42.5°F, a diurnal swing of roughly 38°F. South Lake Tahoe summers near 80°F matter during the install itself, not just afterward. Materials get acclimated in the house they're going into, adhesives and mortars have shorter working windows in the heat, and floating floors need the expansion space that a hot-weather install makes obvious and a cool-weather install lets you forget.

Winter conditions shift the same variables the other way — longer cure times, and floors installed at their contracted size that will grow once the house warms. At roughly 6,237 feet, the winter indoor humidity drop is steep enough to influence which material we recommend in the first place, particularly for wood.

Subfloor and Foundation Work

The City's published 2025 code criteria require exterior footings to extend a minimum of 18 inches below finish grade, and give an assumed soil bearing capacity of 1,500 psf and Seismic Design Category D.

Regionally, crawl space use in Pacific-division construction has declined long-term and dropped sharply only in the past decade, against 89.9% slab in new 2024 builds — so raised floors turn up more often in South Lake Tahoe's 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s stock than in anything recent. A raised floor opens the material list back up — a sound wood subfloor accepts nail-down, glue-down, and floating installations alike. The condition of the crawlspace is what we check first, since a moisture problem underneath will eventually reach whatever we put on top.
