Antelope Conditions That Affect Laminate Flooring

Antelope sits at about 121 feet in Sacramento County. Summer afternoons in the Sacramento Valley are very dry. In the NWS Sacramento climate record for Sacramento, average relative humidity at 4 PM is 31% in June and 30% in July and August, while average humidity at 4 AM in the same months is 78–79%. That daily swing is the condition wood flooring has to absorb.

Winters are wet and mild rather than freezing. January normals at the nearby Sacramento Metro Airport are a 55°F high and a 38°F low, with 3.68 inches of rain; annual precipitation is about 18 inches, nearly all November through March. NWS Sacramento reports snow is so rare it 'may be disregarded as a climatic feature.' In winter the floor contracts, and gaps at the joints are the visible sign that it was installed without enough room to move in the first place.

Antelope has no direct coastal exposure. NWS Sacramento reports that marine air reaches the valley only through the Carquinez Strait near the Delta, producing the prevailing southerly 'delta breeze' that cools summer nights and typically breaks heat waves within two to three days. Antelope's marine air moderates the swing the floor has to absorb; it is the subfloor moisture path, not the room air, that we check first.

Subfloor Prep

Antelope was built as a late-1980s planned community and ACS 2020–2024 5-year estimates put 87.7% of its housing units in construction years 1980 or later, with a median year built of 1993 and 4.5% predating 1960. NAHB's analysis of the Census Bureau's Survey of Construction found 89.9% of new single-family homes in the Pacific division were built on slab in 2024, against 73% nationally. That is a regional figure for recent new construction, not a measurement of Antelope's existing stock — and because the Pacific slab share rose from 73% in 2021 to 89.9% in 2024, it understates how uncertain the 1980s and 1990s tracts that dominate here are. Slab is the reasonable expectation, inferred from build era rather than measured locally, and should be confirmed on site.

Laminate over concrete lives or dies on the underlayment. The core of a laminate plank is fiberboard: the wear layer sheds spills, but the core swells irreversibly if it takes on moisture from below. Over slab that means a vapor retarder is not optional, and it means testing the concrete rather than assuming a newer slab is dry. Flatness matters as much as it does for vinyl — laminate's click joints fail the same way over a dip.

Over a crawlspace, laminate needs the same two things: a flat, sound subfloor and a moisture path that has been dealt with underneath rather than covered over. A damp crawlspace under a fiberboard-core floor is a slow failure, and it shows up first as swollen, peaked joints.
