SPC if the floor needs to be tough — dense core, strong dent resistance, and better behavior in rooms that get hot. WPC if the floor needs to be comfortable — a thicker, foamed core that is warmer, quieter, and more forgiving underfoot.

Both are rigid-core luxury vinyl, both are waterproof, and both click together and float. The difference is what the core is loaded with. SPC uses a mineral filler — limestone-based powder — in the vinyl, producing a dense, thin, hard board. WPC uses a foaming process, sometimes with wood flour, producing a thicker, lighter, softer board with air in its structure.

That density difference cascades. SPC's hardness resists indentation from furniture legs and appliance feet, and its mineral loading makes it less responsive to temperature change — which matters in sunrooms, over radiant heat, and behind large south-facing windows. WPC's foamed core absorbs sound, feels warmer to a bare foot, is more comfortable to stand on, and hides minor subfloor imperfections better than a thin, rigid board does. SPC is the more common choice in busy and commercial-adjacent spaces; WPC is the more common choice in living areas and bedrooms where comfort is the point.

The Variables That Decide It

No comparison answers this for every house. These are the specific things about your project that move the answer, and they are worth establishing before you shop.

Sun exposure on the floor

This is the variable that most often decides it and is most often overlooked. A wall of south-facing glass puts real heat into a floor, and a core that expands with it can open gaps or buckle at the perimeter. SPC's mineral loading is the direct answer to that condition.

What sits on the floor

Pianos, gun safes, treadmills, refrigerators, and furniture on narrow metal feet all concentrate load in small areas. Against that, core density matters more than any other specification, and SPC is materially better at it.

Whether anyone stands on it for hours

Kitchens and workshops make comfort a genuine functional property rather than a luxury. WPC's foamed core is meaningfully easier on feet, knees, and back over a long day.

Ceiling height and door clearance

A thicker board changes the floor height, which affects door swings, appliance clearances under counters, and transitions to adjacent rooms. This is small, unglamorous, and routinely the thing that forces the decision.

The wear layer, which is independent of the core

Core type and wear layer are separate specifications. An SPC product with a thin wear layer will show traffic wear sooner than a WPC product with a thick one, regardless of core density. Do not read "SPC" as "more durable" without checking both.

What do SPC and WPC actually stand for?

Is SPC better than WPC?

Are both actually waterproof?

Yes — both cores are vinyl-based and do not absorb water or swell. As with any floating floor, water can still travel through the seams to the subfloor and needs to be dealt with there. The plank surviving is not the same as the assembly being unaffected.

Which one needs an underlayment?

Many products in both categories ship with a pad already attached, and where they do, adding another can void the warranty and compromise the locking system. Where no pad is attached, SPC benefits more, because its harder core transmits more sound. Follow the specific product's instructions.

Which is better over an uneven subfloor?

WPC, marginally — a thicker board bridges small variations better than a thin rigid one. Neither substitutes for flattening the subfloor. Every rigid-core product has a flatness tolerance in its instructions, and exceeding it stresses the locking joints until they fail.
