The subfloor narrows this to one or two options before preference enters. Wood subfloor and solid hardwood: nail-down, effectively without alternatives. Concrete slab: glue-down or floating, because there is nothing to nail into. Engineered over wood: any of the three, and now the choice is genuinely yours.
Nail-down fastens each board through the tongue into a wood subfloor. It produces the most solid underfoot result with the traditional wood-floor sound, and it is the only method for solid hardwood over a wood substrate. Glue-down bonds the flooring to the substrate across its whole area with an adhesive, which is what makes it the standard for engineered wide plank and for slabs: full-area bonding restrains board movement and eliminates any hollow space beneath. Floating fastens nothing to the subfloor at all — the boards lock or bond to each other and rest as one sheet over an underlayment.
Floating is the most tolerant method and the most compromised one. It handles a slab without adhesive, installs fastest, and can be lifted later. It also requires expansion space at every perimeter and obstruction, sounds hollower underfoot, and depends absolutely on subfloor flatness — a floating floor over a wavy substrate flexes at the joints until they fail. That flatness requirement is not advice; it is a tolerance published in the product's instructions.

- Solid hardwood over a wood subfloor — this is the method it was designed for.
- Traditional strip and plank floors above grade.

The Variables That Decide It
No comparison answers this for every house. These are the specific things about your project that move the answer, and they are worth establishing before you shop.
What the subfloor is made of
Wood or concrete is the first fork and it removes options rather than ranking them. Everything else is secondary to establishing this, and it should be confirmed rather than assumed — many houses have both across different levels.
How flat the subfloor is
Every flooring product publishes a flatness tolerance, and glue-down and floating both depend on meeting it. Correcting flatness with patch or self-leveler is real, unglamorous work that is frequently discovered after demolition. It is the most common source of surprise in a flooring project.
Slab moisture
Concrete releases moisture vapor for a long time, and the amount is testable rather than guessable. It determines which adhesive system or barrier is required, and skipping the test is how glue-down floors over slabs fail. This is a measurement, not an opinion.
What is below the room
In a condo or over a finished space, impact noise is a real constraint and sometimes a written building requirement. Glue-down performs best of the three, floating worst, and building rules may specify an underlayment rating you have to meet regardless of preference.
Whether the floor may need to come up
A floated floor can often be lifted and reinstalled. A glued floor effectively cannot. If the space is a rental, a phased renovation, or anything provisional, reversibility has genuine value.

Is a floating floor worse than a glued floor?
Not worse — more tolerant and more compromised. Floating installs faster, forgives more, and can be removed. It also sounds hollower, gives slightly underfoot, and demands strict subfloor flatness. Both methods produce excellent floors when the assembly suits the room.
Why do floating floors sound hollow?
Because there is an air layer between the floor and the subfloor, and it resonates. A quality underlayment reduces it substantially, and a flatter subfloor reduces it further by eliminating voids. Glue-down avoids the problem entirely by leaving no gap.
Can engineered hardwood be nailed down?
Many engineered products can be nailed or stapled to a wood subfloor, and the product's instructions will say. It is a legitimate method for engineered over wood. Over a slab it is not available, which is why glue-down and floating dominate engineered installation overall.
Do I need an expansion gap with every method?
Yes. Wood and vinyl both change dimension, and a floor pinched against walls has nowhere to go but up. The gap sits under the baseboard and shoe where it is invisible. Floating floors need the most attention here, because the whole field moves as one sheet and needs relief at obstructions too.
Which method is best over radiant heat?
Glue-down, generally, because continuous contact between floor and substrate transfers heat efficiently and no air gap insulates the system. Floating works too, within the product's stated maximum surface temperature. The specific product's radiant instructions govern in either case.
