Laminate Flooring Peaking & Lifting at the Seams

Why is my laminate flooring lifting or peaking up at the seams between planks?

The Short Answer

What Causes Laminate Peaking?

Peaking is what a floating laminate floor does when it needs to expand but cannot. Laminate's core is high-density fiberboard (HDF), which swells with heat and humidity, and the whole floor is meant to grow and shrink as one sheet with a hidden gap around the room's edges. When that perimeter gap is missing or the floor is pinned, expansion has nowhere to go, so two planks push against each other and the locked seam is forced upward into a peak or ridge.

The consequence is that peaked joints are under stress and the HDF edge has often already swelled, so simply pressing them down rarely lasts, and if moisture caused the swelling the core is damaged. The durable fix is to give the floor room to move again — re-cut the expansion gap, free the pin — and fix any moisture source; peaked planks with water-swollen, chipped, or delaminated edges get replaced, because a damaged HDF joint will not lie flat or re-lock.

How to Recognize Laminate Peaking

A raised ridge or tent along a seam that you can feel underfoot or see as a line of lifted planks where two rows meet, sometimes with the click-joint slightly separated at the top.

Root Causes

Why Laminate Peaking Happens

No or insufficient expansion gap

Install standards call for perimeter clearance (commonly about 1/4 to 3/8 inch, per the maker) at every wall and fixed object; without it, thermal and humidity growth peaks the field.

Floor pinned in place

Baseboards nailed into the planks, transitions screwed through the floor, or heavy cabinets and islands on top stop the sheet from moving and force it up at a seam.

Moisture swelling the HDF core

Spills, wet-mopping or steam mops, or slab vapor make the fiberboard expand and lift, and HDF does not return to size once badly swollen.

Subfloor not flat

Deviation beyond NALFA's roughly 3/16 inch in 10 feet lets planks flex and their joints ride up, with humps concentrating the lifting.

Skipped acclimation or seasonal swing

Planks not acclimated to indoor conditions (commonly 48 to 72 hours), or a home with big humidity swings, expand and contract enough to stress and peak seams.

What You Can Check

  • Inspect the perimeter: remove quarter-round or base and check for an expansion gap; laminate butted tight to the wall, tile, or grout is the classic peaking cause.
  • Hunt for pins: look for base or transitions fastened through the planks and heavy items sitting on the field.
  • Moisture check: feel or measure near the peak — a swollen, rough, or delaminating edge and any nearby water source (dishwasher, slider, mop habit) means moisture, not just tightness.
  • Straightedge the subfloor: flatness worse than about 3/16 inch in 10 feet (NALFA) at the peak points to the base; if the subfloor is flat and dry, it is an expansion-gap or pinning problem.

Can It Be Saved? Repair vs. Replace

Tight perimeter, planks otherwise sound: re-cut the expansion gap at the walls and free any pinned base or transition; the floor usually relaxes back down once it can move — least invasive and often complete.

Peaked but dry, undamaged joints: after relieving the pin or gap, disassemble to the peak and re-lock the planks flat, which works only if the HDF edges are not swollen or chipped.

Moisture-swollen or delaminated planks: replace the damaged boards and fix the water source (and add a vapor retarder on slab), because a swollen HDF edge will not re-lock or sit flat and pressing it down is temporary.

Subfloor out of tolerance or widespread peaking: pull the field, flatten the subfloor to about 3/16 inch in 10 feet, correct moisture, and relay with proper gaps — spot fixes will not hold over a bad base.

How to Prevent Laminate Peaking

  • Leave the manufacturer/NALFA expansion gap at every wall and fixed object, and never nail base or transitions through the floating floor.
  • Keep laminate dry: wipe spills promptly, avoid wet-mopping and steam mops, and use a vapor retarder over concrete, because HDF is moisture-sensitive.
  • Prep the subfloor flat to about 3/16 inch in 10 feet (NALFA) before installing.
  • Acclimate planks in the room (commonly 48 to 72 hours) and keep indoor humidity reasonably stable so seasonal movement stays small.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I just weight down or glue a peaked seam?

Only if the joint is dry and the real cause is fixed first. If the floor peaked because it is tight to the walls or pinned, you must restore the expansion gap or free the pin, or the pressure just pops up somewhere else. And if moisture swelled the HDF edge, weighting or gluing will not work, because the fiberboard is permanently expanded and that plank needs replacing.

Why did my laminate peak seasonally — fine in winter, ridged in summer?

That is classic thermal and humidity movement meeting an inadequate expansion gap. In humid or hot months the HDF core grows, and if the perimeter clearance is too small the extra size has nowhere to go and lifts a seam; in dry winter it shrinks back and the ridge relaxes. The fix is a proper gap around the whole floor so seasonal growth is absorbed at the edges, out of sight.

Is peaking covered under a laminate warranty?

Rarely, because it almost always stems from installation or site conditions — a missing expansion gap, pinning, moisture, or an out-of-flat subfloor — which manufacturer warranties exclude. Water damage to the HDF core is specifically excluded on most non-waterproof laminates. A defect claim is possible but weak until the install and moisture causes are honestly ruled out.

Does the Sacramento climate cause laminate to peak?

Our wide seasonal swing — dry, hot summers and damp winters — is exactly the humidity cycling that stresses laminate seams, so a shorted expansion gap here shows up faster than in a stable climate. On slab-on-grade, add slab vapor as a factor. Locally we insist on a full perimeter gap, a vapor retarder over concrete, and stable indoor humidity to keep seasonal movement from peaking a seam.
