Why are my hardwood boards lifting up off the subfloor?

What Causes Buckling?
Buckling is the most extreme moisture failure a wood floor can have: the boards physically separate from the subfloor and lift or tent upward, sometimes by several inches. It happens when boards swell with moisture and have nowhere to expand — the compressive stress builds across the floor until it releases the only direction it can, which is up.
The two ingredients are severe moisture and inadequate room to move: a major water event or sustained subfloor moisture, combined with a missing, undersized, or filled expansion gap at the perimeter, or failed fasteners and adhesive. This is the catastrophic end of the same continuum that starts with cupping — and unlike cupping, it is not a wait-and-see problem. Stop the water and call a professional right away.
How to Recognize Buckling
Boards lifting, tenting, or peaking away from the subfloor, often localized around a leak or flood but sometimes widespread. The floor is no longer attached and may feel loose or spongy where it has released.

A major water event
A flood, a burst supply line, or a large appliance failure saturates the boards; they swell hard and, with no room to expand, lift off the subfloor.
Missing or filled expansion gap
NWFA installation guidance requires an expansion gap around the full perimeter so seasonal and moisture swelling has somewhere to go. If that gap was never left, was too small, or got filled with trim or caulk, swelling has no relief and buckles the field.
Sustained subfloor moisture
Field data attributes most buckling to subfloor moisture combined with inadequate expansion allowance — a slow soak from below builds the same compressive stress as a flood, just over more time.
Fastener or adhesive failure
On glued or nailed floors, a failed bond or loosened fasteners let boards lift once swelling pushes against them.
What You Can Check
- Treat it as urgent: find and stop the water source first, then meter the flooring and subfloor to gauge how saturated the assembly is.
- Check the perimeter for whether an expansion gap exists and whether trim or caulk has closed it off.
- Assess how far the buckling extends and whether the subfloor beneath feels sound or soft — softness signals saturation and possible rot.
Can It Be Saved? Repair vs. Replace
Buckled boards themselves almost always need replacement — the grain is crushed and the attachment is lost, so they rarely return to flat and sound.
Recovery of the surrounding floor hinges on two questions: was a missing expansion gap the culprit (sometimes relieved by trimming the perimeter and re-securing after the floor dries), and is the subfloor still sound after drying.
Engineered boards that have delaminated from the water must be replaced. Widespread buckling usually means a larger tear-out rather than a spot repair.

How to Prevent Buckling
- Leave a correct expansion gap around the entire perimeter per NWFA guidelines (commonly around the thickness of the board), and keep it clear of trim and caulk.
- Test slab and subfloor moisture before installation and install only within NWFA's moisture-differential range.
- Fasten and glue correctly for the product and substrate, and control leaks with appliance pans and supply-line monitoring.
- Hold the home at 30–50% relative humidity so boards are not chronically at the wet end of their range.

Is a buckled floor always a full replacement?
The buckled boards themselves almost always are — they are crushed and detached. Whether the rest of the floor survives depends on the cause: if a missing expansion gap was the problem, trimming the perimeter and re-securing after the floor dries can sometimes save the field. If the subfloor is saturated or the boards are engineered and delaminated, it becomes a larger replacement.
What is the difference between cupping and buckling?
They are two points on the same moisture continuum. Cupping is dimensional distortion — the boards warp but stay attached, and often recover. Buckling is loss of attachment — the boards lift off the subfloor entirely, and are usually permanently deformed. Buckling means much more moisture, and much less time to act.
Should I wait to see if a buckled floor settles back down?
No. Buckling is the one wood-floor symptom you should not wait out. Find and stop the water immediately and get a professional assessment — the longer the subfloor stays saturated, the greater the risk of rot and mold, and the larger the eventual repair.
