Sonoma Conditions That Affect Solid Hardwood

The fix is not a tighter install — it is acclimating the wood to the house's real conditions before it goes down, and setting expansion space at the walls to match the swing this climate actually produces.

NOAA 1991-2020 normals record a January average low of 38.4°F and no measurable snowfall in any month. Winter runs the same cycle in reverse. Solid hardwood is a hygroscopic material: it moves with the seasons for its whole service life, and an install that ignores that is an install that telegraphs every season change through the floor.

July and August average highs are nearly identical (86.0°F and 86.1°F), and both run about 5°F above Santa Rosa and Petaluma — an inland valley pattern rather than a marine-moderated one. The marine influence on Sonoma works in solid hardwood's favor — it moderates the humidity swing that drives seasonal movement — but it also means the wood should acclimate to the house rather than to a delivery truck or a garage.

Subfloor and Foundation Work

The City's own residential plan notes require concrete foundations for stud-bearing walls supporting one floor to have a minimum 12-inch-wide footing, 6-inch minimum thickness, and 12-inch minimum depth below undisturbed soil, and address cripple walls under 14 inches in height and cleanouts for under-floor piping extended outside the building crawl space — so both crawl-space and slab-on-ground construction are contemplated in city practice. Where we're going over slab we test the concrete for moisture first — an in-situ relative humidity test per ASTM F2170 rather than a guess — and where the readings rule out solid wood, we say so and price engineered instead of hoping for the best.

Over a crawlspace, solid hardwood is in its element — plank or plywood subfloors take fasteners well — but only when the crawlspace itself is dry. We check the ground cover, look for standing water and rot at the joist ends, and read the moisture content of the subfloor from below. Cupping in a solid floor is almost always a crawlspace problem that surfaced upstairs.
