Truckee Conditions That Affect Tile

Truckee sits at about 5,980 feet in Nevada County. Summer is the dry season here. Hourly outdoor readings at Truckee Airport averaged 52.8% relative humidity in July across 2022-2024, against 85.3% in December — a seasonal outdoor swing of more than 30 percentage points. NOAA 1991-2020 normals for the Truckee Ranger Station also record a July average high of 83.8°F against a July average low of 41.4°F, a diurnal swing of roughly 42°F. Tile itself is unbothered by Truckee heat — near 84°F outside, an unheated tile floor is one of the few surfaces in the house that stays cool. What heat does affect is the installation: thinset open time shortens in hot, dry conditions, so summer work gets staged in smaller sections so every tile is set into mortar that is still live.

NOAA 1991-2020 normals record a January average low of 16.1°F and average annual snowfall of 206.6 inches, with January (43.6 in.), February (47.9 in.), and December (44.2 in.) the heaviest months. Outdoor relative humidity is at its highest in winter, not its lowest — Truckee Airport hourly readings averaged 82.9% in January across 2022-2024. Cold slows cure times at the other end of the year, and grout and mortar both need to be held above their minimum cure temperature to reach full strength. On a winter job that means heat in the space, not just a tarp over the door. At around 5,980 feet, low winter humidity accelerates how fast mortar and grout give up their water, which is a curing problem rather than a comfort one — it is managed by adjusting the mix and the working section size, not by working faster.

Substrate Preparation

Truckee Municipal Code §15.03.150 amends the state footing provisions to require foundations extend a minimum of 18 inches below grade below 7,000 ft elevation and 24 inches at 7,000 ft and above, with interior footings a minimum of 12 inches.

Truckee's 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s stock straddles the shift toward slab-on-grade: new Pacific-division construction ran 89.9% slab in 2024, but that shift is recent. Both foundation types are genuinely in play here, so we confirm on site before specifying anything.

A slab is the friendliest substrate tile can have — provided its cracks are respected rather than tiled over. A crack that is still moving will come through the tile above it, so it gets treated with a crack-isolation membrane or honored with a movement joint. Slab flatness is what governs large-format tile in particular: the bigger the tile, the less the substrate can deviate before lippage shows at every edge.

Over a wood-framed floor, tile is a deflection question before it is a tile question. A floor system that flexes more than the assembly allows will crack grout first and tile second, regardless of how well it was set. We check joist span and subfloor thickness, add a second layer or a proper uncoupling membrane where the structure calls for it, and tell you if the answer is that the floor needs stiffening.
