Should I install engineered or solid hardwood?
Your subfloor decides this, not your taste. If the floor is going over a concrete slab, over radiant heat, or below grade, install engineered hardwood — solid wood fastened to a wood subfloor is the only assembly solid is built for, and none of those three conditions provide one. If you have a wood subfloor over a vented crawlspace or basement, a conditioned house, and you intend to keep the floor for decades and sand it more than once, solid hardwood is the stronger long-term asset.
Both are real wood. The visible surface is the same species, milled and finished the same way, and once installed you cannot tell them apart by walking on them. The difference is entirely in the section below the surface: solid is one piece of wood through its full thickness, so it swells and shrinks across its width as a single unit. Engineered is a hardwood wear layer bonded to a cross-laminated core, and cross-lamination is what cancels most of that movement — plies oriented against each other physically restrain one another.
That single structural fact produces every other difference. Engineered tolerates humidity swings, slabs, and radiant heat because it moves less. Solid refinishes more times because there is more wood above the tongue to remove. Neither is an upgrade over the other; they solve different problems.

Conditions, not preferences. If one of these describes your project, it should carry more weight than anything else on this page.
Choose Engineered hardwood when…
- The subfloor is a concrete slab — solid hardwood is not a slab assembly at all.
- The room is below grade, or the house has a basement you intend to finish.
- There is radiant heat in the floor, now or planned.
- You want a wide plank. Wider boards move more in absolute terms, and engineered is how wide plank is made to behave.
- The house sees real seasonal humidity swings, or sits empty part of the year with the HVAC off.
- You want a glue-down floor for its underfoot solidity and acoustics over a slab.
Choose Solid hardwood when…
- You have a wood subfloor above grade and a climate-controlled house.
- You expect to sand the floor several times across its life rather than replace it.
- You want a site-finished floor with no micro-bevels and a custom stain match.
- You want the maximum-longevity option and the subfloor permits it.
- You are matching or extending an existing solid floor and want the profiles to line up.

The Variables That Decide It
No comparison answers this for every house. These are the specific things about your project that move the answer, and they are worth establishing before you shop.
What the subfloor actually is
Not what you assume it is. Slab-on-grade is common in newer construction and rules solid out entirely, and plenty of homes have both — wood-framed upstairs, slab at the ground floor. Confirm before you shop, because it eliminates one option outright rather than nudging the decision.
The wear-layer thickness of the specific engineered product
Engineered is not one thing. The veneer over the core varies enormously between products, and it is the single number that determines whether the floor can be sanded later or only recoated. It is on the specification sheet. Two engineered floors that look identical can have completely different service lives.
How long you intend to own the floor
Refinishability is a decades-scale advantage. If the floor will be replaced with the next remodel anyway, solid's extra sanding life is value you paid for and will not use.
Whether the house is conditioned year-round
A house held at a stable indoor humidity is kind to solid wood. A vacation home shut down for months, or a home with big seasonal swings, punishes it — that is where engineered's stability stops being theoretical.

Is engineered hardwood real wood?
Yes. The surface you walk on and see is genuine hardwood of whatever species you chose, milled and finished the same way solid is. Engineered describes how the board is built underneath, not whether the wood is real. The material sometimes confused with it is laminate, which has a photographic image layer and no hardwood at all.
Can engineered hardwood be sanded and refinished?
It depends entirely on the wear layer. A thick-veneer engineered floor can be sanded, though fewer times than solid. A thin-veneer one may tolerate only a light abrasion and a fresh coat of finish — a screen-and-recoat — and sanding it aggressively would cut through the wood into the core. Check the product specification before assuming either way.
Which one lasts longer?
Solid, if the assembly suits it and you refinish it. Its advantage is renewability rather than toughness: the surfaces wear at the same rate because they are the same wood, but solid has far more material available to sand away and start over. An engineered floor with a thin veneer reaches the end of its serviceable life when the veneer is spent.
Is engineered hardwood cheaper than solid?
Not reliably in either direction. Premium wide-plank engineered floors routinely cost more than ordinary solid strip flooring, and the installed difference also depends on method and subfloor prep. Treat the two as different products for different assemblies rather than a budget tier and a premium tier.
Can I put solid hardwood over concrete if I add a plywood subfloor first?
That approach exists — a plywood or sleeper system built over the slab creates the wood subfloor solid needs. It adds height, cost, and a slab moisture-management problem you now have to solve underneath a system you can no longer inspect. It is done, but the reason engineered is standard over slabs is that it solves the same problem with fewer layers.
