Why are my hardwood floor's board edges higher than the center?

What Causes Cupping?

Cupping is a moisture problem, not a defect in the wood or the finish. When the underside of a board is wetter than the top face, the bottom swells more than the top, and because wood swells about twice as much across the grain tangentially as it does radially, the board deforms into a shallow concave, or cupped, shape. The moisture almost always arrives from below or from standing surface water — a damp crawlspace or slab, a slow leak, HVAC condensate, or wet-mopping.

The important consequence: cupping is a symptom, and the durable fix is at the moisture source, not the floor surface. Caught early, a cupped floor will often flatten back out on its own once the source is removed and the room is held in a normal humidity range. The one thing you should not do is sand it while it is still wet — that turns a recoverable cup into a permanent crown.

How to Recognize Cupping

A concave profile across the width of each board — both long edges sit proud of the center, so the floor reads like a subtle washboard and you can feel ridges at the seams, especially when light rakes across it.

Why Cupping Happens

Moisture from below

The most common cause: a crawlspace or slab releasing moisture into the underside of the boards with no vapor retarder, so the bottom face swells against a drier top.

Leaks and spills

A slow plumbing or appliance leak, a dishwasher or refrigerator line, or standing water that wicks into the seams and swells the boards edge-first.

Slab or new-construction moisture

Concrete releases moisture for a long time. Installing over a slab that was not moisture-tested, or in a home still drying out after construction, feeds cupping from below.

Wet-mopping and steam mops

Repeated damp or steam cleaning drives water into the joints and the board edges over time — a slow, self-inflicted version of the same moisture gradient.

Seasonal humidity swings

In a home that runs very humid in summer, boards can cup mildly during the wet season and relax again in winter; that seasonal version usually needs humidity control, not repair.

What You Can Check

  • Confirm it with a moisture meter, reading both the flooring and the subfloor — surface appearance alone does not tell you whether moisture is still active.
  • A meaningful gradient (a wetter subfloor or board underside than the top face) means the moisture source is still feeding the floor and must be found first.
  • Check the crawlspace for a missing or torn vapor barrier and any standing water, and look for leaks at appliances, plumbing, and exterior walls.
  • Note the pattern: cupping concentrated near a fixture or wall points to a leak; cupping across a whole slab-on-grade room points to slab or crawlspace moisture.

Can It Be Saved? Repair vs. Replace

First rule, from NWFA guidance: do not treat or sand a cupped floor until every source of excess moisture is located and eliminated, verified with a moisture meter on the subfloor.

Once the source is gone and the room is held at 30–50% relative humidity, mild-to-moderate cupping often flattens partially or fully on its own as the board re-equilibrates — this can take weeks to many months, because the finish slows drying from the top.

Only after the floor has returned to its equilibrium moisture content and stayed flat should sanding be considered. Sanding a still-cupped floor removes the swollen edges and leaves a permanent crown once it dries.

Severe or prolonged cupping that has crushed the grain (permanent compression) or damaged the subfloor moves toward board replacement rather than recovery.

Prevention

How to Prevent Cupping

  • Test slab moisture before installation using an in-situ relative-humidity test per ASTM F2170, and install only when the subfloor and flooring moisture contents are within NWFA's differential (within 4% for strip under 3 inches, within 2% for planks 3 inches and wider).
  • Put a vapor barrier and adequate ventilation — or a conditioned, encapsulated crawlspace — under the floor so moisture cannot migrate up into the boards.
  • Hold the home in the NWFA service range of 30–50% relative humidity and 60–80°F year-round.
  • Never wet-mop or steam-mop a wood floor — clean damp-to-dry only, and wipe spills immediately.

Will a cupped floor flatten out on its own?

Often, yes — if it was caught early and the moisture source is removed. Once the room is held at a normal 30–50% humidity, mild-to-moderate cupping frequently flattens back out over weeks to months as the boards re-equilibrate. The finish slows the drying, so it takes patience. Severe or long-standing cupping that has crushed the grain usually will not fully recover.

Can I just sand a cupped floor flat?

Not while it is still cupped. Sanding removes the swollen edges; when the boards later dry and those edges relax, the center is left standing proud — a permanent crown, usually six months to a year later. Wait until a moisture meter shows the floor is back to equilibrium and it has stayed flat before any sanding.

What causes cupping in a Sacramento-area home?

Most often slab or crawlspace moisture in a home built on grade, a plumbing or appliance leak, or wet-mopping. Given how common slab-on-grade construction is across the region, an in-situ slab relative-humidity test and a look at the crawlspace are the first things we check.

How do I know if the moisture is gone?

A moisture meter reading of the flooring and the subfloor is the only reliable answer. When both have returned to a stable equilibrium moisture content for a conditioned home (roughly 6–9%) and stayed there through a humidity change, the source is controlled.
