Livermore sits at about 507 feet in Alameda County. Livermore Municipal Airport, 3.0 miles from the city center, averages 34.0% relative humidity at 4 PM and 79.2% at 4 AM across the ten Julys 2015-2024 — a daily swing of roughly 51 points, against 27 points at Oakland International Airport over the same period. Afternoon air is less than half as humid as bay-side Oakland's 65.3%. Livermore summers near 88°F matter during the install itself, not just afterward. Materials get acclimated in the house they're going into, adhesives and mortars have shorter working windows in the heat, and floating floors need the expansion space that a hot-weather install makes obvious and a cool-weather install lets you forget.

NOAA 1991-2020 normals at Livermore Municipal Airport record a January average high of 57.4°F and an average low of 37.8°F — roughly 7°F colder at night than bay-side Oakland in the same month. Winter conditions shift the same variables the other way — longer cure times, and floors installed at their contracted size that will grow once the house warms.

The largest of the thirty-eight soil units USDA-NRCS SSURGO maps here is Livermore very gravelly coarse sandy loam, a series named for this valley, covering 15.1% of the city at a linear extensibility of 1.5% — the lowest NRCS shrink-swell class. Citywide, 32.5% rates low and only 10.9% high, against 78.4% in Danville fourteen miles northwest. Coarse gravelly fan material holds its dimensions through the wet-to-dry cycle in a way the San Ramon Valley clays do not.

Livermore's 1950s, 1960s, 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s stock straddles the shift toward slab-on-grade: new Pacific-division construction ran 89.9% slab in 2024, but that shift is recent. Both foundation types are genuinely in play here, so we confirm on site before specifying anything.

Foundation type is the first thing that narrows the material list, and concrete narrows it hard. A slab rules out a nailed-down solid wood floor and puts the decision between engineered, vinyl plank, laminate, and tile — each of which handles concrete differently. We test the slab for moisture before recommending any of them, because the test result, not the budget, is what determines which methods are actually available.

A raised floor opens the material list back up — a sound wood subfloor accepts nail-down, glue-down, and floating installations alike. The condition of the crawlspace is what we check first, since a moisture problem underneath will eventually reach whatever we put on top.
