How to Care for Your Hardwood Floors

Keeping a hardwood floor beautiful for decades doesn't take much — just a handful of consistent habits. Here's what actually matters.

A hardwood floor is one of the best investments you can make in a home, and the good news is that keeping it looking great doesn't require anything complicated — just a handful of consistent habits that protect the finish and the wood underneath it. Here's what actually matters day to day.

Sweep or Vacuum Regularly

Grit and dust act like fine sandpaper underfoot, gradually dulling a floor's finish every time someone walks across it. Regular sweeping or vacuuming, with a hardwood-safe setting or attachment and avoiding a beater bar that can scratch the surface, removes that grit before it has a chance to do damage. This is genuinely the single most impactful habit for preserving a hardwood floor's finish over time — more so than any specific cleaning product.

Clean Up Spills Promptly

Hardwood and standing liquid don't mix well. Wiping up spills as soon as they happen, rather than letting them sit, prevents water from working its way into seams and affecting the finish or the wood underneath. This matters most near sinks, entryways, and anywhere pets have water bowls.

Use the Right Cleaning Products

Wood-safe hardwood cleaners are formulated to clean without leaving a residue or damaging the finish. Avoid steam mops, excessive water, and generic all-purpose cleaners not intended for wood floors — these can dull the finish, leave streaks, or in the case of steam, introduce moisture directly into seams. A slightly damp, never wet, mop with a proper hardwood cleaner is generally the safest approach for routine cleaning.

Protect Against Furniture and Foot Traffic

Felt pads under furniture legs prevent scratches when chairs, tables, and other pieces get moved or shifted. Area rugs in high-traffic zones — entries, in front of the kitchen sink, hallways — absorb a lot of the wear that would otherwise land directly on the wood. Walk-off mats at exterior doors reduce the amount of grit and moisture tracked in from outside in the first place.

Manage Sunlight Exposure

Direct sunlight can fade or shift the tone of hardwood over time, and it usually happens unevenly, under a rug or piece of furniture that stays in one place for years, leaving a visible outline once it's moved. Rotating rugs and furniture periodically, and using window treatments in the sunniest rooms, helps keep color more consistent across a floor.

Keep Pet Nails Trimmed

Pet claws are one of the most common sources of fine scratches on hardwood over time. Keeping nails trimmed and providing traction, such as a rug in areas where pets run or play, reduces the wear that builds up gradually and becomes noticeable only after years of accumulation.

Manage Indoor Humidity

Hardwood expands and contracts with humidity changes, and large swings between very dry and very humid conditions can lead to gapping or, in more extreme cases, cupping. Keeping indoor humidity reasonably stable throughout the year, not necessarily perfect, just consistent, reduces stress on the wood and helps the floor perform the way it's designed to.

Recoat or Refinish When the Finish Wears Thin

Even with excellent care, a finish wears down eventually, especially in high-traffic areas. Catching that wear early, before it reaches bare wood, often means a lighter screen-and-recoat is enough to restore protection, rather than a full sand-and-refinish. Waiting too long can mean more extensive work later.

Small Habits, Long Payoff

None of this requires special tools or a lot of time, just consistency. A hardwood floor that's swept regularly, cleaned with the right products, and protected from excess sun and moisture will hold its finish and beauty for many years longer than one that isn't.
